Necessity Is The Mother Of Invention: Real Life Solutions by DigiByte Developers
Creative solutions always start in one place: the problem. In fact, DigiByte began as a creative solution to some of the issues with Bitcoin. Since then, DigiByte has been evolving, improving and solving problems along the way; for ourselves and other blockchains. This digitorial is a glimpse inside the mind of a DigiByte developer, Matthew Cornelisse. He is presenting a possible solution to a very important issue in crypto; how to store and protect your private keys so only your loved ones could have access. Reading his thoughts made me appreciate the fact that every solution comes from real life situations and how lucky we are that DigiByte has such creative problem solvers on our team.
Backup Seed Solution:
“Been thinking of my mortality lately. I may be only in my 30s but my best friend was killed by a drunk driver in his 30s so anything can happen. So I was trying to think how I could secure my backup seed in such a way that no one could steal it, parts could get lost, but if I got hit by a bus tomorrow my wife could get my DigiByte. To this end I decided I need to split my seed phrase up in such a way that only 2 out of 3 cards would be needed, but with only 1 someone couldn’t steal. I thought about writing an app that did some calculations and made 3 cards of equal length each with 256bits of data and 2 of 3 could recover the original but decided this may not be obvious to my descendants. After checking the BIP39 specs, I realised I could safely write the phrase down in triplicate and remove 8 different words from each and have a simple 2 of 3 system that was still secure.”
